Why Electric Vehicles Use Lithium Ion Batteries?

We all know that the emission of fuel is harmful for the atmosphere. Although, the fuel emission standards are set up to control harmful emission to some extent. Till now Euro 7 is the maximum standard to protect the atmosphere, however, still the fuel is burnt to release CO2 and other gasses.

Therefore, Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the dependence on fossil fuels. This is another interesting topic about why electric cars are the future, which we will discuss later.

The success of EVs depends largely on the efficiency and performance of their batteries that act as their fuel. The idea to use lead storage batteries was not good because they are heavier, dangerous to keep, and don’t provide enough power. Hence, the manufacturer used Li-ion rechargeable batteries that are 10 times more powerful, lighter in weight, compact and don’t need special care.

In this article, we will discuss the benefits of using Li-ion batteries in electric vehicles and why only lithium batteries?

Which EV Battery Is Used By Tesla?

Tesla uses lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for their electric vehicles or supercars. To meet demand for Electric Vehicles units sold worldwide, Tesla has set up its own in-house battery production known as “Gigafactories”. Similarly, JIEYO has a large-scale battery production plant to fulfill the demand of its customers worldwide.

Tesla produces custom lithium batteries that are designed to provide maximum charge in a compact box, and fast charging capability. Tesla has also developed advanced battery management systems to prolong the lifespan of their batteries while consuming maximum performance when discharging.

Thus the motive is to compact the battery size by increasing charge power density and consume more performance.

Li-ion Batteries Are Known For High Energy Density

The power density of a battery is the amount of energy it can store per unit of weight or volume. The higher the energy density, the more energy the battery can store. Hence, battery powered electric vehicles will get more miles per full charging. Unlike lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride batteries that may be useful for specialized purposes, Li-Ion is the future of electric vehicles.

Another factor is that Lithium-ion batteries have a higher voltage (EMF) than other types of ordinary batteries. Allowing to store more energy per unit of volume or weight making it denser to store double charge.

Lithium Battery has a Longer Life Span:

This is true that a lithium battery has a long life span due to Li (Lithium) which is a very reactive metal. On average, a well maintained unit can last more than 10 years meaning that they can cover the purchasing cost due to its longer life span.

The life of a battery totally depends on the purity of a metal used in them. A well purified Li with a fine quality of electrolyte will be responsible for power storage and longer lifespan. Hence, making it perfect for electric vehicles.

How Faster Charging Works With Lithium Battery?

Fast charging in a Lithium battery is led by charging it with a high voltage. Therefore, the standard charging rate is decreased whereas increases the chances of overheating. But thanks to the modern technologies used in electric vehicles that prevent overheating the batteries.

A battery that is designed to charge at a high voltage flow rate for charging is known as a fast charging battery. The inside wiring is pure copper and also has heat sinks to immediately cooldown the battery while fast charging. Again thanks to sense chargers that regulate voltage to keep the temperature within safe charging parameters.

In contrast, nickel-metal hydride batteries will require hours to charge fully, making them less practical for electric vehicles.

Why Li-Ion Battery has a Lighter Weight?

The weight of a battery is determined by the capacity to store charge. Meanwhile lead storage batteries use more cells, and electrolyte to store charge making them heavier. However, a lithium battery with the same capacity to store charge will have high power density in a less volume and weight.

Another factor that makes Li-Ion batteries lighter is the composition of Lithium and carbon. Therefore, when the power is twice the weight of the battery, it makes more efficient electric vehicles.

Very Standard Maintenance:

EV cars don’t need any special care for their powerful lithium batteries. They don’t require topped up water or electrolyte levels as lead-acid batteries. Moreover, if we talk about frequent deep cycling calibration, which is necessary for nickel-metal hydride batteries, it isn’t needed for lithium ion batteries.

However, a lithium ion consumer should take care of the increasing temperature while charging. The smart system is there to show you warnings, charging temperature regulation and other important factors that help in longer life span.

Conclusion

Li-ion batteries are the latest technology evolved in electric vehicles. Due to their many benefits like, high energy density, low self-discharge rate, longer lifespan, faster charging, lighter weight, and lower maintenance these batteries are best for electric vehicles.

Because there is a huge demand for custom lithium batteries, JIEYO has set up a plant for large-scale production.
